5 ways to reduce your food waste for 2024

Ready to kickstart 2024 on a good foot? We have got you covered with this year’s FIRST Tuesday Tips. Of course it is food related in order to stay relevant, and obviously sustainability focused as that is what CHOMP is all about. #CHOMPions

1 . Tupperwares are your best friends

You must have heard us say a countless amount of times to bring your own Tupperware and might even be tired of hearing it (we don't blame you)? But that's because it is one of the most effortless thing to do with a massive impact! Not only are we preventing our food from going to waste, but we are also reducing our plastic waste. If you need inspo on where to find the most practical reusable containers, then check out sustainability stores across Hong Kong like Slowood HK or LiveZero HK.

2 . Love your leftovers

Sometimes portion sizes are difficult to predict or our eyes are bigger than our stomachs and we over order/cook. Instead of discarding our food surplus, why not store it in containers (see point 1 above 😉)? You can view our previous recipe posts where we share multiple ways of transforming leftovers into new meals. Additionally, learning how to store food can save it from going to waste. If you know you want to enjoy the leftovers within the following 2-3 days, then place them in the fridge shelf. If you are uncertain and feeling indecisive, then opt for freezing them. A simple microwave wonder will allow you to enjoy the leftovers without ever wasting!

3 . Sharing is caring

Why not share the love if you have made too much food or ordered more than you can chew? Invite your family and/or friends over to enjoy your food surplus together! This is a simple way of ensuring our food feeds tummies rather than filling our landfills.

4 . Expiration drawer or shelf

This one takes a little bit more initiative but it is so worth the extra effort. Dedicate a shelf/drawer in your fridge/dry pantry for foods that have a short shelf life. That way you can easily identify what ingredients need to be used first, without having to think too much. You can also add recently opened foods (such as jars, packets of dried foods, etc.) so you can enjoy those first before opening new ones. Did someone say “hello efficiency"? One final tip regarding food date labels, view our graphic below to familiarise yourself with the different labels and how to optimise consumption and storage.
