Compostable Food Packaging: What Actually Works (and What Doesn't)
If you operate a restaurant, cafe, or food brand in Hong Kong in 2026, "we use compostable packaging" is one of the easiest sustainability claims to make and one of the hardest to make truthfully. The category is genuinely confusing, the labelling is uneven, and a meaningful share of products marketed as compostable in the HK market won't actually compost in the conditions they'll encounter.
This is a practical guide to picking compostable food packaging that does what it says — without paying premium prices for greenwashed alternatives or building a sustainability story on materials that fail in practice.
The category, defined
A few terms get used interchangeably. They shouldn't be.
Biodegradable. Means the material will eventually break down via microbes. Doesn't specify how long, under what conditions, or into what. A plastic bag is "biodegradable" if you give it 500 years. The term is so vague it's nearly useless on packaging.
Compostable. Means the material breaks down within a defined time period (typically 90–180 days) under specific composting conditions, leaving no toxic residue. This is the meaningful claim.
Home compostable vs industrially compostable. A critical distinction. Home compostable means the material breaks down in a domestic compost bin (cooler, less consistent conditions). Industrially compostable means it requires the higher temperatures and controlled conditions of a commercial composting facility (typically 55–70°C). Most "compostable" products on the market are industrially compostable — they will not break down in a home compost or, importantly, in landfill.
Bioplastic. A plastic made from plant material (corn starch, sugarcane) rather than petroleum. Some bioplastics are compostable; many are not. The plant-based origin and the compostability are separate questions.
The single biggest source of confusion in HK F&B procurement is operators assuming "bioplastic" = "compostable." Often it isn't.
The materials that actually work
Bagasse (sugarcane pulp). Sturdy, heat-resistant, microwave-safe, industrially compostable, often home-compostable in good conditions. Excellent for hot food containers, plates, bowls. Slightly more expensive than plastic, but the performance is solid. Recommended for most takeaway use cases.
Moulded fibre / paper pulp. Similar to bagasse — good for cold and warm food. Recyclable as paper in most municipal systems. Less suitable for liquids and very oily foods unless lined.
PLA (polylactic acid). A bioplastic, industrially compostable, requires commercial composting facilities to actually break down. Critical: in a landfill or home compost, PLA can persist for years. Only use PLA if you have a clear path to commercial composting. In HK, that means partnering with one of the commercial composters or sending to O·PARK1/O·PARK2 — which doesn't currently accept all PLA grades.
CPLA (crystallised PLA). A heat-resistant variant of PLA, used for hot cutlery and lids. Same composting constraints as PLA.
Wood and bamboo cutlery. Genuinely compostable in most conditions, including home compost. Slightly heavier per-unit cost than plastic cutlery, but consumer perception is strongly positive. Recommended.
Wax-paper-lined boards. For pizza, sandwiches, baked goods. Generally compostable, with the wax layer being the variable to check.
The materials to be wary of
"Biodegradable plastic" without a compostable certification. This category is full of products that fragment into microplastics rather than fully degrading. If a vendor can't show you a certification (TÜV OK Compost, BPI, or equivalent), assume it's not actually compostable.
Oxo-degradable plastics. Conventional plastic with additives that cause fragmentation. The EU has banned them. They create microplastic pollution rather than solving it. Avoid.
PFAS-coated paper. Some paper takeaway packaging is coated with PFAS ("forever chemicals") to make it grease-resistant. The paper looks plant-based; the coating is genuinely problematic. Check vendor certifications for PFAS-free claims.
Generic "eco" or "green" labelling. Without a specific certification mark, these claims are marketing language, not technical fact.
The certifications to look for
Three marks that mean what they say:
TÜV OK Compost (Industrial / Home) — the European standard, widely respected. Specifies whether industrial or home composting.
BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) — North American standard, focused on industrial composting.
EN 13432 — the underlying European standard for industrial compostability.
If a product carries one of these marks, it's been independently tested. If it doesn't, treat the compostability claim as unverified.
The HK-specific reality check
Here's the awkward truth that most "compostable packaging" pitches in Hong Kong skip: the city's commercial composting infrastructure is still developing. O·PARK1 (Lantau) and O·PARK2 (Sha Ling) have meaningful capacity, but most domestic and commercial food waste in 2026 still goes to landfill alongside the packaging it was served in.
What this means in practice:
An industrially compostable PLA container thrown in a regular bin in HK probably ends up in landfill, where it won't compost.
A bagasse container does the same, but bagasse degrades meaningfully faster than PLA even under landfill conditions.
The packaging choice still matters — but the difference between "compostable" and "actually composted" depends on what happens after the customer is done with it.
So: don't pick packaging based on the label alone. Pick based on the realistic end-of-life path.
A practical procurement playbook
If you're a HK F&B operator deciding what to buy:
For takeaway containers: bagasse is almost always the best balance of cost, performance, and end-of-life behaviour. It works whether or not it ends up in commercial composting.
For cutlery: wood or bamboo. They genuinely compost in most conditions, and they don't carry the heat-resistance trade-offs of CPLA.
For cold drink cups: moulded fibre with PLA lining is the current best practice, but check whether you have a route to commercial composting. If not, look at paper cups with no lining or with a thin wax coating.
For pizza boxes, sandwich boards, baked goods: wax-paper-lined fibre boards, ideally with PFAS-free certification.
Avoid: anything labelled "biodegradable" without a compostable certification, any oxo-degradable plastic, anything where the vendor can't tell you whether it's home or industrially compostable.
What customers actually notice
Customer research in HK consistently shows that visible sustainability cues at the point of consumption — kraft-paper bag, fibre container with no plastic-looking elements, wood cutlery — drive significantly more positive perception than equally sustainable packaging that looks conventional. The bagasse container reads as eco; a clear PLA cup looks like ordinary plastic.
If you're going to invest in better packaging, lean into the materials that signal sustainability visibly. The marketing payoff comes with it.
The bigger picture
Compostable packaging is a meaningful sustainability lever, but it's the third or fourth most impactful one available to most F&B operators. The first three — reducing food waste, sourcing locally, switching to plant-forward menus — typically have larger climate impact per dollar invested.
Packaging matters. It's also visible, which makes it tempting to lead with. But the operators with the strongest sustainability stories in HK are the ones doing all of the above — and using packaging as the visible expression of a deeper kitchen practice.
